Have you ever questioned if the messages you hear are genuine? In 1 John 4, we're encouraged to test the spirits and understand the vital connection between love and knowing God.

The Reading: 1 John 4

World English Bible
1 Beloved, don’t believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

>

2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit who confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God,

>

3 and every spirit who doesn’t confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God, and this is the spirit of the Antichrist, of whom you have heard that it comes. Now it is in the world already.

>

4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world.

>

5 They are of the world. Therefore they speak of the world, and the world hears them.

>

6 We are of God. He who knows God listens to us. He who is not of God doesn’t listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

>

7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves has been born of God, and knows God.

>

8 He who doesn’t love doesn’t know God, for God is love.

>

9 By this God’s love was revealed in us, that God has sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.

>

10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son as the atoning sacrifice for our sins.

>

11 Beloved, if God loved us in this way, we also ought to love one another.

>

12 No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God remains in us, and his love has been perfected in us.

>

13 By this we know that we remain in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.

>

14 We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as the Savior of the world.

>

15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God remains in him, and he in God.

>

16 We know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and he who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.

>

17 In this love has been made perfect among us, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment, because as he is, even so are we in this world.

>

18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear has punishment. He who fears is not made perfect in love.

>

19 We love him, because he first loved us.

>

20 If a man says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who doesn’t love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?

>

21 This commandment we have from him, that he who loves God should also love his brother.

What This Chapter Is Really Saying

# Testing the Spirits

In this chapter, John urges us to be discerning. Not every spirit or teaching is from God, and many false prophets have crept into the world. To differentiate between the true and the false, John gives us a simple test: if a spirit confesses that Jesus Christ came in the flesh, it's from God. If not, it's not.

The Power Within

John reminds believers that they have already overcome these false teachings. The one who is in them (God) is greater than those who are in the world. This assurance gives us strength as we navigate a world filled with competing messages.

The Essence of Love

The heart of this chapter is love. John emphasizes that love is from God, and anyone who loves is born of God and knows Him. If you've ever wondered what God is like, look at love - God is love! This love was revealed through Jesus, who came as a sacrifice for our sins, demonstrating the ultimate act of love.

Living in Love

John encourages us to love one another. If we love others, it shows that God lives within us. He explains that no one has seen God, but through our love for one another, God's presence is made evident. The more we embody love, the more we reflect God's nature.

Confidence in Love

In a beautiful conclusion, John declares that perfect love drives out fear. If we fear, it indicates that we haven't fully embraced God's love. Our love for God is rooted in His love for us; if we claim to love God but harbor hatred for others, we're deceiving ourselves. John's final command is clear: if we love God, we must also love our brothers and sisters.

Why It Matters

# The Importance of Discernment

This chapter teaches us to be vigilant. With so many voices in our world, it's essential to discern what aligns with God's truth. Testing the spirits helps us remain grounded in our faith.

Love as a Foundation

John's emphasis on love is crucial. Love is not merely an emotion; it's an action and a choice. By loving others, we participate in God's divine nature, making His love visible in the world around us. We can find a church community where love is practiced and shared - find a church near you.

Fear and Confidence

Moreover, the idea that perfect love casts out fear is liberating. Many of us carry fears that hinder our relationships and spiritual growth. When we embrace God's love, we can face life's challenges with confidence. It's not about being perfect, but about allowing God's love to shape us.

Living Out Our Faith

Finally, the challenge is clear: loving our fellow humans is a non-negotiable part of our faith. As we reflect on our relationships, let's commit to expressing love genuinely and courageously. Our interactions can be a testament to God's love at work in us.
